  1. Having spoken to him and his team. I highly doubt he’ll retire. He’s fairly involved with his constituency and doesn’t seem too bothered.
If anything I think it’ll spur him on to stay and be more vocal about the issues important to him like Palestine.

  2. I think he’s still got a lot in the tank. It’s not uncommon for an ex-cabinet minister to sit on the backbench for another term or two or even make a return to cabinet.

  3. Idont think it make any difference in a seat like this it more a CALD working class seat unlike Brand which can be more Nationalist.

  4. This seat would be interesting as there is a large CALD population but might have a sizable One Nation support as very high concentration of public housing especially North of Mount Druitt plus a Flippino Population might be more supportive of ONP compared to other non-white groups since they are Devout Catholics and could be probably amongst the least hostile non-white group for One Nation and most Right-wing Nationalist (as long as they are kept small).

I think thr main reason that Filipinos are the the most accepted Non European community. Is that they are closest culturally to Westerners if race is not take into account sharing relision and a Westernised culture. Filipinos are actually the 3rd largest Non European community in Australia after Chinese and Indians and now outnumber Vietnamese. The reason is also they have a large rate of marrying into the Anglo majority so unless Filipinos are replenished through immigration they will be the first non european community to have been melted into the majority. I think that one of the resons why many right wingers see them as the preferred migrant group among Non Europeans.

  6. @Nimalan, Vietnamese are interesting given many of them are Catholics but I think Vietnamese Catholics deviated significantly from mainstream Catholics to suit their own Vietnamese culture especially allowing ancestor veneration that prominent in oriental cultures.

I agree so Vietnamese Catholics have probably diverged as you said whereas Filipino culture never had a Confucian influence. The Vietnamese community in Australia is about 25% Catholic which is an overepresentation due to former South Vietnamese government being Catholic-dominated while newer immigrants from Vietnam today who are typically international students rather than refugees are less likely to be Catholic. I think shared religion is probably why a Goan Catholic (such as Zaneta Mascerenhas, Leon Rebello or Joanna Howe) will be more accepted compared to a Sikh like Filipinos they have European sounding surnames and will more likely to intermarry into the majority. Today Right wing nationalists want assimilaiton where minority groups melt or absorbed into the majority. In the UK the Afro-Carribean community is seen as likely to be dissapear due to intermarriage despite a big racial difference as they shared much in common in other aspects such as language, religion etc.
